Citizen
Video Journalist Training in 2009
Do you have a video camera
and a computer?
Can you spare a day to be taught how to film and edit a news
report?
Would you like to join a network of motivated people filming their
own news?
We will show you how to find and produce a short news report about grassroots life within your own community including activist events.
Throughout 2009, Undercurrents will be seeking to find 30 people around the UK who will put their camcorder to good use. If you would like to become a citizen video journalist, contact us by email and we will keep you informed when we begin our training workshops.Undercurrents
has proved that anyone with access to equipment and the right training can effectively
use video to bring about positive change in their community. Video cameras have
become more portable, easier to use and best of all, cheaper. Now you can make
a video reflecting your life, campaigners can gather evidence of factories polluting
water supplies, you can produce an empowerment video aimed at getting people motivated
into action. We can show how you can distribute your video across the web, or
even get your images onto mainstream television news and current affairs programs.
Aimed at people with little or no experience of using video, this workshop will teach you to operate any video camera and edit a basic video feature.
The workshop consists of demonstrations and practical exercises including:
- Holding and using a camcorder with confidence
- Obtaining good audio quality
- How to get the right images to tell a story
- Understanding the cables and accessories
- How to interview people
- How
to put your new video skills into action

Movies such as Farenheit 911 and Supersize Me have video activism
at their core. Protests involving mass numbers of people on the streets with placards
are being replaced with more spontaneous smaller direct action. A trained video
person can film an event and have their images seen within minutes by thousands
across the web.
This video was made by a first timer during
our video training course.
If you want to be a video activist or are part of an environmental or social justice campaign and feel that video could make a difference, then contact us to discuss a workshop.
Picking up a video camera for the first time and gazing at the many buttons and dials may seem daunting, but hundreds of people regardless of age, gender and background have been trained in how to use video as an effective tool by Undercurrents. Useful resources for Video Activism can be found here
