Citizenship and the 'Undercurrents' Project in late 1990's Britain
October
9- 10 Slovenia
Ruth Heritage explores how Undercurrents negotiates mainstream
television as an alternative / public sphere, through the use of documentary,
actuality, and reality tv motifs. Using video footage from BBC's Video Diaries
and Crimewatch alongside Undercurrents I note how this creates an 'undercurrents'
citizen, with a shared collective identity and boundaries, which seeks ideological
alignment. I conclude by observing potential limitations of such citizenship,
through a discussion of video distribution and activist screenings, illustrated
by Undercurrents footage.

The Yes Men- The Movie (90min).
For years,
two pranksters fooled corporations that they represented the World Trade Organisation.
Follow their hilarious exploits around the world wearing thrift-store suits as
they set out to shock their unwitting audiences with darkly comic satires on global
free trade. However, exhausted by their failed attempts to shock, Mike and Andy
take a whole new approach for one final lecture. The Yes Men is directed by Dan
Olman, Sarah Price, and Chris Smith
We hope the film will be presented by
star of the movie Andy Bichlbaum.
