If you do not live in Oxford, I have given a few links
and contacts that will hopefully give you an avenue to research where the
nearest community garden is to you. The National
Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens is probably your best
bet for this information, (bearing in mind that they only know of projects
that are members). There are quite a few community gardens around the UK,
but they can be hard to track down. If there is not one near you, then maybe
you could start your own? All you need is a bit of land such as an allotment
(they only cost £15 ish a year) and a few mates, you don't even need
any gardening knowledge (I was surprised how much support and information
we were offered by the local community, especially the gardening community).
You can start off informally, or do it officially like we did and spend
the winter sorting the paperwork (bloody time consuming, but it keeps the
allotment group / council / someone happy and insured, making the project
more permanent) and grants etc. Then be ready to start gardening in the
spring. More information on how to set up your own
community garden, and other ideas...
If you live in Oxford…We meet at Elder Stubbs on the first and third Sunday of every month (if the weather is not too evil), from lunchtime (well, 2pm) onwards. If you have any questions, you can contact us through email on actionwench@yahoo.com. For directions have a look at the map I made earlier.
