1994-2024 Undercurrents: Celebrating 30 years in(direct) action

'Undercurrents the alternative news video issue 1' was released on VHS tape on April 1st 1994.
In 2024, we are celebrating 30 years since we launched our first Undercurrents alternative news video. Most notable feature included the country's first video feature informing about the imminent introduction of the Criminal Justice Bill. A series of new laws which attacked the right to protest, to squat, right to silence and to assemble amongst many others. The The first batch of 250 VHS tapes was sold out in a few weeks and press reviews were very positive. Our film about the M11 Link road protests won awards. Mariella Frostrup reviewed Undercurrents for The Little Picture Show which generated many subscriptions to the Undercurrents alternative news videos . |

The Guardian In 1994 Undercurrents moved into a resource centre in Archway in North London, sharing with various campaign groups. We set up the Camcorder Action Network to co-ordinate the increasing number of video activists. We had to use VHS casette to distribute our videos in the era before YouTube (which didn't launch until 2005) . Read our history here. Undercurrents even won the first of many international awards with first prize in the prestigious German OKOmedia festival '94 with our film about a road protest in East London. |
